Just had one of the most moving moments of my life. I didn’t feel like waiting at the drive-in at McDonald’s for a coffee. Last night I was thinking about brothers I lost and was feeling down. While I’m standing in line (wearing an AIRBORNE hat), the guy behind me shook my hand and thanked me.
I’ve never been a big one for that, but he was wearing a Nike ARMY jacket. I have tried to find one with no luck, so I asked him where he got his from. He told me his son was a West Point grad. I asked him what his son did. He told me his son was a 1st LT. with The BIG RED ONE. Naturally, I asked where he is stationed now. His eyes watered up and said, “Great Lakes National Cemetery.”
My heart dropped. I let him know my thoughts were with him my thoughts were with him and his wife. He told me that he was by himself, he lost his wife two years ago to cancer. I felt a tear run down my cheek. He mentioned his son’s KIA date was coming up on May 13th… I felt another tear roll down my cheek, so I reached out and gave him a hug.
I told him that I would go with him to Great Lakes on the 13th and have a few beers with him and my brother. He asked, “Brother?” I said, “Yes. You lost a son but I lost a brother.” I gave him my number and told him that he just gained another son, so he will never be by himself. We exchanged information and confirmed I will be going to Great Lakes with him on the 13th. He ended up getting his order before I got my coffee. When I walked out, he drove passed and the first thing I noticed was his GOLD STAR plate. I was feeling bad last night… Not anymore. We ran into each other for a reason.
